Exercise Prescription for the Older Persons
Bae Ha-Suk

Abstract
Aging process is complex characterized by progressive multi-system derangement, especially sarcopenia represents a highly prevalent correlate of aging. So we have to focus on muscle and exercise is one of the most important treatment of sarcopenia. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that older adults engage in a combination of aerobic, resistance, flexibility and balance training using FITT-VP (Frequency, interval, time, type, volume, progression) principle. And older persons should participate in aerobic exercise 3 to 5 days per week, maintaining age-related target heart rate for 20 to 60 minutes. Resistance training should be performed at least twice per week and should involved the 7 major target muscle groups. Proper technique is necessary and speed and breathing should be controlled individually. The periods of warm-up and cool-down sessions is recommended longer for the older persons than young persons. To Increase the physical activity also should be encouraged. In prescribing exercise for older persons, nutrition such as Vit. D and protein must be closely monitored. All the exercise prescription for older persons needs to be individualized, taking into consideration the patient¡¯s health status, nutritional intake, abilities, preferences, status of chronic disease and resources. The prescription of individualized exercise according to FITT-VP principle should be encouraged for the older persons and should be considered personal physical activity in exercise prescription associated with aging. Exercise combined with nutrition is helpful for the development of muscle in older persons.
